Art Show: Circling the Confluence: an exploration around the Elora Gorge

Today I drove west from Toronto to the lovely community of Elora to view Andrea Bird and Daniel Beirnes’ Collaborative Show Circling the Confluence: an exploration around the Elora Gorge. Andrea and Daniel are partners in life as well as art – living rurally in Wellington County with their family. Andrea’s primary medium is encaustic while Daniel sculpts with natural elements, using branches and stone in this case. For this project, they have collaborated on both the wall pieces and the sculptures, treading into new territory together. Over the past decade, they have worked together on various ...

Botanicus Exhibition – in celebration of Earth Day

"Botanicus" Republic Plaza, Denver thru May 18, 2011 Botanicus is an exhibition celebrating the beauty of the natural world. This has long been an inspiration in my own work. As the light changes throughout the day the colors change as well, imitating nature in it's operation. In my work I try to embody the simplicity and empathy of haiku and for these pieces I thought haiku ...

Project Harmony: 32 artist coming together

In the last part of 2009, my friend and fellow artist, Anne Smidt sent me an enthusiastic email asking if I wanted to be a part of a new project, a collaborative work. Anne had just finished working with me on the 4th annual International Encaustic Artists (IEA) Retreat & Conference in Carmel Valley, CA where I had spent the past 3 years as the director for the annual gathering of artists working with encaustic. Anne had created a database and reporting system for all of the registrations - so I knew that she would bring an ...

The Artist Project Toronto – 10 artist showing Encaustic

Two hundred artists fill the Queen Elizabeth Building at Exhibition Place this weekend (March 3-6 2011) for Toronto's annual event, The Artist Project. Now in its fourth year, the Artist Project features a wide range of mediums, including installations and video art, as well as art chats and docent-led tours. I first heard about The Artist Project last year from artist Andrea Bird. Andrea was displaying encaustic art at a booth she was sharing with other artists from the Propeller Gallery. So much art under one roof! Definitely, an event I want to attend every year. Yesterday, ...
