My Classes in Painting with Fire

Underpainting: Pigmenting Encaustic Gesso

Learn how to create an underpainting using pigmented encaustic gesso. I demonstrate how I mix R&F encaustic gesso with Kama Aqua-Dispersion Pigments and set up a stay-wet palette to keep the paint workable.

You’ll also see how the same pigments can be mixed into black chalk paint to create a wider range of colours. We’ll explore mark-making techniques to build visual interest on the substrate, then layer encaustic medium and paint over the dry gesso, transforming the surface from matte and chalky to rich and luminous.

Komorebi: Sacred Light Through Trees — A Photo Encaustic Project

Komorebi describes the phenomenon of sunlight filtering through trees.

In this project, silhouetted branches and blocks of colour come together to create a stained-glass effect. I’ll walk through how to photograph winter tree branches, prepare the image, and print it for use in encaustic.

I demonstrate how the panel is prepared with encaustic and how the image is integrated into the work. Then I show how colour is added to the negative spaces between branches, allowing the tree form to guide the composition.
